This fall Haaga-Helia and DIHUB students have for the first time the possibility to study AWS SysOps. After completing the course the students may take the certification test at AWS.

The first implementation of the AWS (Amazon Web Services) Cloud Operations  course started at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in August 2021. The implementation of the course is completely virtual and thus participation is possible for all Dihub students in the participating countries. The course has real-time sessions, laboratory exercises in the AWS cloud environment, student presentations, and an exam in the Moodle environment of Haaga-Helia.

The real-time sessions of the course typically focus on three areas:

1) Giving context to the course contents;

2) Providing practical guidance on the laboratory environment and the hands-on lab exercises;

3) Giving the students examples of use cases in real-life business.

The context for the course contents typically includes an independent comparison of AWS products with the products of other cloud providers and motivating examples as well as an explanation on how the course contents relate to the contents of other Dihub courses and IT courses at Haaga-Helia. The example use cases from real-life business are typically offered in cooperation with companies in the form of guest lectures and sometimes as course projects. The AWS-related Dihub courses have already hosted guest lectures from the Haaga-Helia partners Cloud2 and TietoEvry. This new course will probably also include use cases from these companies. However, the dates of the guest lectures are currently being negotiated and will be announced shortly.

After taking the course, the students have the possibility to take the certification exam AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate. They have access to a free practice exam and a 50% discount on the certification fee. Even if the students do not take the AWS certification, they have earned 10 ECTS credits as students of the Dihub network, they have learned the essentials of systems operations in the AWS cloud environment, they have hands-on experience of the system administration tasks on the AWS cloud and they know how all this knowledge and skills can be applied in working life.

The text is written by Dr. Lili Aunimo, Dihub project manager at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, and Mr. Olavi Korhonen, the lecturer of the AWS System Operations -course.
